Links should work now - we were in the process of migrating the site between machines and there was a minor configuration issue. Please let us know if you encounter any further issues.

2014-05-29 07:06:28 -0500 answered a question SOLR parameters in REST API

The query string decoded is:

/v1/query/solr/?q=isDocumentedBy:"[* TO *["&rows=1000

Which is attempting to perform a literal search on the value "[* TO *[" within the isDocumentedBy field. It looks like the query is intended to find all documents that have a isDocumentedBy value. The correct form for such a query is:

q=isDocumentedBy:[* TO *]

encoded as a URL fragment would be:

isDocumentedBy%3A%5B*%20TO%20*%5D

The full URL would then be something like:

${NODE}/v1/query/solr/?q=isDocumentedBy%3A%5B*%20TO%20*%5D&rows=100

which is a very verbose response. The list of fields returned may be restricted using the "fl" parameter, so for example, to retrieve the list of identifiers of objects that have an isDocumentedBy entry:

${NODE}/v1/query/solr/?q=isDocumentedBy%3A%5B*%20TO%20*%5D&rows=100&fl=id

A list of identifiers could then be retrieved by processing the resulting xml using a tool such as xmlstarlet:

NODE="https://cn.dataone.org/cn"
curl -s "${NODE}/v1/query/solr/?q=isDocumentedBy%3A%5B*%20TO%20*%5D&rows=100&fl=id" | \
xmlstarlet sel -t -m "//doc" -v "str[@name='id']" -n

with the result:

doi:10.6085/AA/SHLX00_XXXIBTNXTSR01_20120815.40.1
ark:/13030/m5vt1qt7/2/cadwsap-s3600375-001-vuln.csv
ark:/13030/m5vt1qt7/2/cadwsap-s3600375-001.pdf
...
doi:10.6085/AA/SCPXXX_015MTBD003R00_20021018.40.1

Which is a list of all objects that are documented by some other object as asserted by an OAI-ORE resource map document.

2013-05-03 10:06:48 -0500 edited answer What is a Member Node?

Member Nodes are organizations that are software enabled (have installed the DataONE Member Node software) to store, manage, and provide access to digital scientific data holdings as part of the DataONE federation of repositories. Member Nodes provide descriptive metadata to DataONE Coordinating Nodes to facilitate discovery and retrieval of data. Enabling access to data through DataONE provides users with additional tools (see the Investigator Toolkit) for data management, retrieval and analysis.

Member Nodes provide access to their own data, and may partner with other data holders to provide access to partner's data and metadata. Member Nodes may have direct connection with user communities and encompass a diversity of organizations, institutions, and capabilities. There are different functional tiers for Member Node services which recognizes that different organizations have different needs and capabilities.

For more information on Member Nodes see: https://www.dataone.org/member-nodes

2013-03-21 01:30:30 -0500 edited question How can we download a specific set of metadata fields for a large number of metadata records?

We are interested in getting metadata for a large number of records from DataONE. For example, we'd like to be able to retrieve the identifier, title, abstract, and keywords for all publicly accessible metadata documents in DataONE. Rather than retrieving each metadata document through the DataONE API individually and then parsing them to extract the needed metadata, it would be a lot more efficient for us to get a data dump of the metadata documents in DataONE, which we can then parse ourselves to get only these fields. How can we go about retrieving this large number of records?

2013-03-08 14:46:59 -0500 answered a question Where can I chat with DataONE developers to resolve issues when deploying a Member Node?

DataONE has moved to Slack for real-time messaging.

Please visit slack.dataone.org to be added to the DataONEorg Team and join the #dataone group.

Developer topics are generally discussed on the #ci (specifics) or #dataone (more general) channels.

The IRC channel is no longer in use and will soon be disabled.
