A: To prepare data for addition to a DataONE repositotry, first consult one of the many quality data preparation guides and resources available. Examples include:

• Best Practices for Preparing Environmental Data Sets to Share and Archive (2010) by Les A. Hook, Suresh K. Santhana Vannan, Tammy W. Beaty, Robert B. Cook, and Bruce E. Wilson. Available online at ( from Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, U.S.A. doi:10.3334/ORNLDAAC/BestPractices-2010. • Manage Your Data: Data Planning Checklist. UC3: University of California Curation Center. California Digial Library. Last updated December 14, 2012. Available from • Create & Manage Data. 2012-2013. UK Data Archive, University of Essex. Available from

Specific, preparation for submitting data to a DataONE repository depends upon the software that a particular member node (repository) is running. For specifics of further preparation refer to the documentation of the Member Node you wish to work with. A list of DataONE Member Nodess and their descriptions can be found here For member nodes running Metacat, the submission process can be as easy as using Morpho to save the data to your repository's Metacat instance. Other repositories, such as ORNL DAAC, have much more involved data review and curation practices.

Your answer would benefit from adding a link to the DataONE Best Practices site, and by giving some concrete, common examples. For example, how to convert an Excel spreadsheet into a CSV file and upload it to a Member Node along with associated metadata. Maybe that should be a separate question?
