DataONE has a number of resources to support individuals / institutions in their data management needs.

Our Primer on Data Management is probably the best place to start. This is designed for the early user to learn more about the data life cycle, terms / techniques commonly applied to data management and best practices for the management of data. Written as a downloadable PDF, these recommendations link directly to our Best Practices database which highlight over 60 different expert recommended practices for managing data across all stages of the data life cycle, from file naming conventions to data integration to robust preservation. We also have a data management guide designed specifically for practitioners working with citizen science data.

When you are ready to start planning your data management, we have resources to help you. The Data Management Planning section of our website provides a summary of what is expected within a Data management Plan (DMP), example plans and also links out to the DMPTool, the product of a collaboration across a consortium of institutions and organizations, including DataONE. The DMPTool helps users create ready-to-use data management plans for specific funding agencies, meet funder requirements for data management plans, provides step-by-step instructions and guidance for building a data management plan provides information on resources and services available at your institution.
